The land for Cedar Grove Cemetery was purchased by the town of Lebanon in 1846. Prior to this, the City Cemetery was located on South College Street. Town leaders thought the old cemetery too close to the Public Square and sought a new location. Remains were re-located to new plots in Cedar Grove Cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of many early families including Governor Campbell, Robert L. Caruthers, David Mitchell, General Robert H. Hatton, and over 150 Confederate soldiers. The soldiers were memorialized with a monument placed in 1899. Presently the cemetery contains approximately 34.6 acres, 11 acres remain undeveloped.
